CanQuiz is free, and so is the AI
No subscription, no paid plan, no crippled tier. AI generation comes included, within a monthly limit. If you run short, you can connect your own key and generate without a limit, paying that usage to Anthropic or OpenAI.

The whole app
Building quizzes by hand, importing JSON, practicing, sharing, copying other people's quizzes and spaced repetition. No cap on quizzes or sessions.
Taking public quizzes
Anyone can open a published quiz and practice it without signing up.
The account
Signing up is free and asks for no card. There has never been a paid plan and none is planned.
If you want to generate without a limit
The included AI covers 20 generations a month and up to 5 a day, which is more than almost anyone uses. If you need more, or want to pick the model, you connect your own key: it stays in your browser and the provider bills you directly, never through CanQuiz.
Get a key
You create an account at Anthropic or OpenAI, add credit and generate an API key. If you have never used their console, expect to create an account and add a payment method before you can generate one.
Paste it into CanQuiz
In the AI settings. It is checked against the provider and stored only in your browser, never on CanQuiz's server.
Generate and pay your usage
Every generation spends tokens from your key. The provider bills you, at their rates and within your own spending limits.
What it actually costs
Measured on real CanQuiz generations. A typical quiz runs about 15 questions and spends roughly 9,000 input and 2,000 output tokens.

Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. No subscription, no paid plan, no features behind a wall. The only thing that costs money is AI generation, and you pay that to whoever issued your key, not to CanQuiz.
Why doesn't CanQuiz include the AI?
Because the included AI has a limit, and that limit is what lets the service stay free with no subscription. With your own key you generate without a cap, pick the model, see exactly what you spend and set your own spending limits.
What if I don't want to get a key?
You can use CanQuiz without one: build quizzes by hand, import JSON, practice, share, copy public quizzes and review. Only AI generation needs a key.
How much will I spend a month?
It depends how much you generate. On the default model, one quiz a day works out around 60 US cents a month. Providers let you set a spending limit so there are no surprises.
Is handing over my key safe?
The key is stored in your browser's storage and travels to the provider to generate. It is not saved in CanQuiz's database. You can delete it from settings or revoke it in the provider's dashboard at any time.
Will there be ads?
There are none today. If they ever became necessary to keep the project going, it would be said clearly beforehand.
